ABOUT

Hello, I’m Milly, founder of Hound & Away.

I am a fully qualified member of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), I have also gained an Accredited Dog Training & Behaviour OCN qualification with the IMDT. I'm a member of the Pet Professional Network.
The organizations I choose to learn from all share my ethical, force free approach to training and use methods backed by scientific research. As a chemistry graduate, modern dog training allows me to use my science background to continuously learn and keep up to date with the latest research in dog behaviour, to better help you and your dog.

I have always loved dogs, and have never been without one, but my interest in training them and, more specifically, the psychology behind how they learn and why they do what they do, came about when I got my Transylvanian Hound, Nova - to quote my vet, a breed that 'is not for the faint hearted'.

I knew everything about having my own dog, in theory, but every dog is different, each have their own unique personality and with that their own challenges. Nova is very independent and has an incredibly high prey drive and I simply didn't know how to motivate her as much as a fluffy squirrel tail could - now I do, and thats why having a strong relationship with your dog and good engagement from them is such an important part of my training philosophy.

I also regularly take Nova on courses that allow her to use her nose and give her an outlet for her strong instincts, these activities include: Mantrailing, tracking and scent detection.

I have a passion for gun dog breeds. My very first dog was a lovely golden labrador and we currently have two beautiful Hungarian Vizslas in the family. Scooby is 11 and now extremely reliable and Rex is currently a 6 month old whirlwind, but very trainable compared to Nova.

I'm currently learning gundog training with Rex and this is something I'd love to specialize in, in the future, as there are not many force free trainers around in the sport.

Professional Development

I am dedicated to continuously learning, through courses, workshops and reading.
